Great Dunmow v East Bergholt Cricket Club Two Counties First XI on Sat 23 Apr 2016 at 13:00
East Bergholt Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report After the disappointment of the opening fixture being rained off, the Two Counties First XI got their season underway with a trip to Great Dunmow. The neighbours were busy building new defences once they heard of Heinzey's inclusion in the squad after his performance their last time, especially considering he had spent Friday night with motivational street fighter Gyspy Joe....alas 15 pints of Asahi later, Heinzey wasn't quite ready to disturb the foundations of the Dunmow suburbs.

The skipper does what he does best and lost a very vital toss and East Bergholt were put in to bat. This loss looked even more crucial with the side floundering to a very quick 34-4 with Foster, Gedney and Enslin all losing their wickets cheaply. A partnership of 46 between Pickford, who reached his 5th consecutive half century in Bergholt colours, and Fairchild who worked doggedly for hours for his 29, seemed to steady the ship. However, there wasn't much of a wag in the Bergholt tail and only a elegant 11 from Molton gave the lads any hope as they finished the innings on 118 all out in the 40th over.

Debutant, and new overseas signing, Mike Enslin was impressed with the way the young lads carefully selected their nutritional tea as they embarked upon defending the low total. The half time entertainment was brought to us by local resident Cliff, although he was quickly asked to turn off his very loud and horrific sounding radio.

The Dunmow batsman started their innings brightly as they used the pace of Enslin to score some much needed boundaries. However the South African was soon reaping the rewards of his intense Bergholt pre-season training session last weekend with two wickets in two balls. Despite not being able to take the hat-trick a third wicket did fall for the loss of no runs in the next over and all of a sudden the hosts were starting to feel the pressure of a low run chase at 27-3. After those quick wickets Dunmow slowly but surely got back on track and a solid partnership of 47 between Ali and Reid put victory within grasp with only 45 more runs needed. More madness ensued as another 3 quick wickets fell starting with an absolute wonderful diving catch from Chennery at Mid-off. Another golden duck followed with Foster grabbing a tough high change in the covers but the highly coveted hat-trick was again missed as McGrath's full toss/attempted yorker didn't quite work. Last years record breaking wicket taker, Philpot, got his first wicket of the season with a controversial LBW decision and the hosts were reeling at 79-6. Alas, there were to be no more wickets as opening bowler Rix came in at number 8 and he made a solid 25 not out with wicket keeper Reid who finished 36 not out to get Dunmow over the line with a comfortable 19 overs remaining.

Despite the large amount of overs remaining it was a tight, evenly competed game and with a lot of grit on display in the field Bergholt proved that they will be a tough match in Division 2 this year. Finally, a big thanks to Heinzey for his impressive bowling display.
