Lakenheath v East Bergholt Cricket Club Two Counties First XI on Sat 14 May 2016 at 13:00
East Bergholt Cricket Club Lost by 95 runs

Match report The afternoon turned out a lot like the weather, sunny in places but otherwise cold and miserable. It was a tale of two innings both of which Bergholt lost with ease. The track and outfield were hard and the cool breeze delayed the warm-up as the changing rooms were a much warmer place to be. Hand warmers were to the fore, apart from George who broke his!

Having won the toss, the skipper elected to field in blustery conditions and opened the bowling with Mike and Nathan Smith. Mike’s off spin was coming through a lot quicker this week, so much so that the batsmen used the pace though the offside, with little foot movement and runs came quite quickly. At the other end, once used to the run up and the new ball, Nathan bowled good lines with plenty of swing away from the batsmen and was rewarded with the first wicket.

After this Lakenheath developed some good partnerships, bowing changes were made and Nathan Philpot bowled well with good economy for the first 10 over of his spell, picking up 3 wickets in the process. There should have been more wickets as the batsmen were also teasing us with edges through the vacant slip area and chipping the ball just over the fielders head as we didn’t get much luck. Having said that Bergholt put together possibly one of the worst fielding performances in my 3 seasons at the club, it was an abject display, hands in pockets, dropped catches and allowing ones when there shouldn’t have been and twos when they should have only been singles. Despite some harsh words from Nathan Philpot, plus encouragement and motivation from behind the stumps, some of the good work in slowing the run rate down disappeared with some late order slogging. Nathan Smith returned to take a wicket in the last over following a few overs from the night owl Ben McGrath and the trainee off spinner George Foster. Unfortunately Ben had to be taken out of the attack after suffering from Robot Legs, although he said it was sore shins / hangover etc.

Despite a bit of doom and gloom at tea and cold hand’s a score of 235 was achievable on what appeared to be a good wicket to bat on.

On promotion from the two’s Barney looked very solid against Lakenheath’s opening bowler and George was so keen to face him that he backed up too far and got run out, however this was a dubious decision and one that seemed to go on the loudness of the appeal.

The rest of the innings was a combination of losing quick wickets, then having a little stand and so on. Stands between Barney & Mike, Mike & Rob, Rob and Jamie and finally Jamie and Ben, tell the story of our innings, despite a few of us getting in, a combination of good balls and bad shots sawus finish a long way off the total we were looking for.

Positives from the game saw Nathan Smith back to the bowler we saw more of in 2014 and a return to form of Nathan Philpot. Barney batted well at the top of the order and Jaimie settled into his innings despite nearly having his head taken off by a bouncer.

Any negatives coming out of the match would be the fact that there seemed to be a lack of enthusiasm, we looked flat and didn’t have the usual banter, aggression and feel good factor that we normally field with.
