East Bergholt Cricket Club Two Counties First XI v Elmstead on Sat 21 May 2016 at 13:00
East Bergholt Cricket Club Lost 49 runs

Match report The troops arrived at Gandish Road full of optimism against a strong Elmstead side. With overseas coach Enslin arriving at the club promising more drills than B&Q, we were treated to exactly the same warm up as we have had for the last 5 weeks. Next up the toss, Claudio “Tinkerman” Gedny, living less than a hundred yards from the square had not even looked at Bazzas pitch all week. He lost the toss and Elmstead elected to bat. With the “Tinkerman” delivering another of his “Winston Churchill-Esque” speeches, the troops were full of motivation to tear into the Elmstead openers.

Ben and Mike opened up with Ben getting an early breakthrough. Elmstead opener Farid “Peter Pan” Butt was batting as well anyone will at Gandish this year, backed up by their number 3. The pair took Elmstead passed 150. The Tinkerman now came into his own by changing the bowling bringing on young Roscoe. With only his 3rd ball took the wicket of Peter Pan, flight, guile, drift, and spin led to Pan skying a leading edge. Personally I just don't think he could decide which part of the ground to hit it to!

After a spell of 11 excellent overs Enslin was replaced with Last, who bowled 4 very good overs before suffering a shoulder injury. Lets hope this did not affect his extra-curricular activities in Norwich later that evening….. More tinkering then ensured from Claudio Gedny which led to him being told off by Umpire Strikes Back for not keeping up with the over rate.

With Elmstead's number 3 reaching a near faultless hundred they surged past 200. Only a fine returning spell by Ben McGrath and a run out towards the end left Elmstead with 245-5 off their 45 overs.

A word on Barney who one can only assume cut his finger on the butter knife during drinks break, which led to a trio of dropped catches from him. There was talk at tea of possible severing of arteries, a visit to A&E for stitches, but Barney being Barney just used a good old fashioned plaster and soldiered on. I agree with what Barney said as well, “Potts wouldn’t have held them either”!

Pickford and Sulky Foster opened up. Pickford showing again that class is permanent and form is temporary, tucking into whatever the Elmstead bowlers threw at him. Sulky Foster fell early, due to still having a tear in his eye which must have clouded his judgment of the ball, more on him later.

Barney, still braving the injury settled in well but got undone having made a promising start. Enslin started to flay the ball to all parts and looked very assured until patting back a half tracker to be caught and bowled.

The Tinkerman then joined Pickford who surpassed his 50, and was eventually applauded when he scored his 52nd run……… By this time sulky had re-appeared from the dressing room to join the others in the clubhouse. Coinciding with Pickfords 50, Sulkys sister arrived at the club to pick up little Bro…….. and we can only assume that this healthy distraction was what led to the Bergholt players and supporters forgetting about Pickford.

Tinkerman copied Enslin falling to another Caught and bowled, with Robbie Smyth falling shortly after.

Needing 130 runs off the last 15 overs the run chase was slipping away from Bergholt, and even more so when Pickford fell for a fine 78. 175 was reached to gain an extra batting point, however some fine hitting by young Roscoe in the last couple of overs nearly got us to 200, just falling short ending the Bergholt Innings on 197 for 8.

A word on “Peter Pan Butt” who gave a masterclass display in wicket keeping. The Elmstead skipper told me after the game he was 54 years old and was a “freak”. I think he is a hugely talented cricketer, as opposed to a freak!

All in all a good effort, but had we saved 20 runs less runs in the field and not lost a couple of key wickets things could have been different.
