Ipswich v East Bergholt Cricket Club Two Counties First XI on Sat 10 Jun 2017 at 13:00
East Bergholt Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Having won the last three games the First XI were looking to continue their fine form at league leaders Ipswich on Saturday.

With the skipper, marginally delayed and racing back from a wedding in the South of France George was temporarily in charge! He managed to win the toss, and elected to bowl and gave a truly inspirational team talk....

The decision to bowl looked a great one as Hammond mistimed a short one from Hunter and the ball looped up to Jamie in the covers, who after having a cup of tea and quick chat with Ross at point, decided to react and just snagged a great low catch! Having rattled through the Mildenhall side last week our tails were up we could have had skipper Rusby back in the hutch but Geds was unable to take a tough low diving edge off McGrath. This was our possible chance gone as the slow going Rusby and Burch started to put together a steady relationship with Burch doing all the work and pushing the scoreboard up. Alas, after notching his half century and just as Ipswich were approaching the 100 mark he was the next man to go as Geds took a fine catch moving forwards off Burch's shoulder of the bat giving Connor his only wicket of the day 98-2. Potts was the next to claim a wicket as Henry Foster took a lovely high catch at mid-wicket leaving the innings interestingly poised at 142-3. Perrin joined Rusby who was still taking his time but Perrin soon got going and with some fine reverse sweeps and paddle shots he got the scoreboard ticking over quickly. Rusby finally fell for 86 in the final overs as Henry Foster ran him out with a "roll" to the stumps that would have been better placed on a lawn bowls green. Perrin was bowled by Henry for 38 and another run out at the death meant the home side finished on 217-6.

Rich, who earlier in the week wasn't selected for either the First or Second XI, and George opened up after tea looking to get our run chase underway. Rich, who unsurprisingly was subject to some short stuff from Smith after last years trip to A&E, took the bull by the horns and started quick off the blocks as he had 25 on the board already when George was caught at slip for 2. Rich and Connor then went about business and were picking off boundaries and crucial runs here and there whilst keeping in touch with the run rate. Rich then reached his first half century for the club in over a year and Connor fell shortly after that for 33 as he was caught at cow corner which saw the end of a fine 86 run partnership between the two. As Rich continued to pick up runs steadily, Geds added a quick fire 15 as he was caught at deep square leg. This saw us at 145-3, still needing 63 runs to complete victory. Henry Foster then joined Rich and he also was looking to score quickly as he hit a couple of fine fours. During this period Rich notched up his maiden Division Two century, edging Smith through the slips for four runs. The pair added a crucial 29 runs before Henry was caught at deep mid-wicket for 13 off 17 balls. Skipper Sam, seemingly over his hangover now, then joined Rich as we closed in on victory although overs were running out. Rich, on his last legs, then finally succumbed to Smith as he was bowled for a fine 116 runs, leaving us needing 18 more runs for victory. This crucially brought the substantially quicker Ross to the crease and this allowed us to push the fielders as we ran hard between the wickets for those important runs. Sam was seeing the ball nicely and it was nip and tuck as we reached the final over needing four runs. It was he who then smashed Smith through mid-wicket for four and the winning runs with 4 balls to spare ending the game 30 not out off 25 balls. A great game played in good spirit which saw us run out victors and gave us our fourth victory on the trot!
